Scripture describes faith as “the assurance of things hoped for” and “the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1 ESV). Men and women of old walked with God and received commendation for their faith. This conviction described in the Bible is essential to our walk with God.
The Bible speaks about two kinds of fear. One is beneficial and encouraged: the fear of the Lord, which helps us walk rightly with God. The other kind of fear Scripture speaks about tends to bring doubt about God. This kind harms our walk with God and must be overcome. For the sake of this article, our focus is on overcoming this second kind of fear through faith.
What Does “Faith Over Fear” Mean?
“Faith over fear” is not a direct quotation from the Bible, but it expresses an important biblical truth. It means choosing to trust who God says He is, what He has promised, and how He has demonstrated His faithfulness, even when fear tries to steal our peace.
Second Timothy 1:7 (ESV) tells us, “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” A spirit of fearfulness and timidity does not come from God. Faith is not confidence that everything will happen exactly as we want. It is confidence that God is good, sovereign, and worthy of our trust, regardless of what happens.
God’s Love Helps Us Face Fear
Fear could sometimes overwhelm us. It creates distress and doubt in our minds. However, we can respond by trusting the One who holds all things in His mighty hands and sustains us even in our weaknesses. We overcome fear through God's love because His perfect love casts out fear.
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love (1 John 4:18 ESV).
God knows our weaknesses and shortcomings, and He has generously encouraged us throughout the Bible. In Isaiah 41:10, He tells His people not to fear because He is with them. He promised to strengthen, help, and uphold them. This does not mean we deny the worrying circumstances we may be facing; it also does not mean these circumstances will disappear immediately. This means we do not face it alone. God’s presence gives us courage to continue walking faithfully.
Faith Trusts God in Difficult Circumstances
Our trust in God grows as we learn more about Him through His word and know that He is good. Job demonstrated this kind of trust while enduring profound suffering. Although he did not understand what God was doing, he continued to place his hope in Him (Job 13:15 ESV).
Faith does not deny pain, uncertainty, or difficulty. It acknowledges them while declaring that they do not have the final word. God remains sovereign over every circumstance, and His promises remain true. Trusting God in the presence of fear means choosing faith over fear.
What Is Biblical Faith?
Biblical faith is confident trust and active reliance on God. It is grounded in God’s character, shaped by His Word, and centered on Jesus Christ. Scripture presents faith as essential to our walk with God.
Faith is more than agreeing that God exists. It means depending on Him, believing His promises, and responding to Him with obedience. We walk by faith when we follow God even though we cannot see every step ahead.
Here are five biblical reminders that can help us choose faith over fear.
Seek First the Kingdom of God
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33 ESV)
While Jesus taught His disciples about godly practices, He spoke these words to teach His followers not to be consumed by worry about their daily needs. Instead of allowing anxiety to control us, we are called to make God’s kingdom and righteousness our priority.
Seeking God’s kingdom first means placing Him above our worries, desires, and plans. Rather than allowing fear to direct our lives, we are called to trust God and pursue what honors Him.
Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life
Jesus declared, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6 ESV)
Our faith does not rest in our strength or abilities. It rests on Jesus Christ, the very foundation on which our faith is built. Jesus Christ, our hope of being with the Father. When fear creates doubts in our minds, we can always return to the truth revealed in Christ.
Walk by Faith
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7 ESV)
Walking by faith means continuing to trust and obey God even when we cannot see the entire path ahead. We may not understand everything He is doing, but we can trust that He sees what we cannot see. Faith does not require us to know the entire journey before taking the next faithful step.
Faith Over Fear
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7 ESV)
Fear may speak loudly, but it does not have to determine our response. By the sincere faith bestowed upon us through faith in Christ Jesus, we're reminded through His Word that God gave us a spirit not to fear. Through God’s strength, we can respond with faith, love, and self-control.
Lord, I Believe
Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief! (Mark 9:24 ESV)
Just as the father responded to Jesus, when fear grips our mind, we can always turn our eyes to Jesus and cry out "I believe; help my unbelief". This father’s prayer reminds us that genuine faith does not mean we never struggle. We can bring our weaknesses and doubts honestly before God and ask Him to strengthen our faith.
Choosing faith over fear is a repeated, daily decision we make as Christians. When fears arise, we can respond by praying and telling God about them, reading and meditating on His Word, and taking the next step of obedience even while we feel afraid. We fix our eyes on Jesus, “the founder and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2 ESV).
