The first name used for God in the Bible is Elohim. It appears in the opening sentence of Genesis, where God creates the heavens and the earth. The name points to His power, majesty, and authority as Creator.
Before anything existed, God was already there. Everything we see—including humanity—exists because He gave it life. This means that our lives are not accidental or without purpose. We were created intentionally by a God who possesses the wisdom and power to bring creation into being.
Remembering God as Elohim can encourage us when life feels chaotic. The One who brought order out of emptiness is still able to bring direction, beauty, and purpose into situations that appear confusing. We may not understand everything He is doing, but we can trust the wisdom of our Creator.
Yahweh — The Eternal and Faithful Lord
When God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses asked what he should say when the people asked for God’s name. God answered, “I AM WHO I AM,” and identified Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Exodus 3:13–15).
Yahweh is connected with the four Hebrew letters YHWH, often called the divine name. It points to God as the eternal, self-existing, and faithful Lord. He does not depend on anyone else for His existence, and He remains faithful throughout every generation.
For the Israelites, Yahweh was not a distant or unknown deity. He was the covenant-keeping God who heard their cries, remembered His promises, and acted to rescue them.
This name reminds us that God is dependable. Circumstances change, people sometimes disappoint us, and our own emotions can rise and fall, but God remains the same. We can place our confidence in Him because His faithfulness is rooted in who He is.
El Roi — The God Who Sees Me
Hagar’s story in Genesis 16 is one of the clearest pictures of God meeting someone who felt forgotten. Pregnant, mistreated, and alone in the wilderness, Hagar encountered the Lord. In response, she called Him El Roi, meaning “the God who sees me” (Genesis 16:13).
Hagar was in a place where she may have felt invisible to everyone around her, but she was not invisible to God. He saw her suffering, spoke to her personally, and gave her hope for the future.
El Roi remains a comforting reminder for anyone walking through loneliness, rejection, or uncertainty. God sees more than our outward circumstances. He sees the private tears, unanswered questions, and burdens that other people may never notice.
Being seen by God does not mean that every difficulty will disappear immediately. It means that we never face those difficulties unnoticed or abandoned. The God who saw Hagar also sees us with compassion and care.
Jehovah Jireh — The Lord Will Provide
In Genesis 22, God tested Abraham by asking him to offer his son Isaac. When the moment came, God stopped Abraham and provided a ram for the sacrifice. Abraham named that place “The Lord Will Provide,” commonly expressed as Jehovah Jireh (Genesis 22:14).
The original biblical expression carries the sense that the Lord sees and provides. God already knew what Abraham would need, and the provision was present at the right time.
Jehovah Jireh does not mean that God promises to give us everything we want. It means we can trust Him to know what we genuinely need and to remain faithful to His purposes. His provision may appear as strength for a difficult season, wisdom for a decision, help from another person, or an unexpected opportunity.
When we are worried about the future, this name invites us to remember God’s past faithfulness. We may not yet see the answer, but God sees the whole journey.
Yeshua — The Lord Saves
Yeshua is the Hebrew form of the name Jesus and is connected with the meaning “the Lord saves.” In Matthew 1:21, Joseph was told to name Mary’s son Jesus because He would save His people from their sins.
The name Yeshua brings the message of salvation to the centre of the Christian faith. God’s greatest provision is not merely material help but rescue from sin and reconciliation with Him through Jesus Christ.
